Douglas County Boys Basketball Tryouts: A Two-Night Event to Kick Off the 2024-2025 Season
November 11, 2024

As the 2024-2025 basketball season approaches, excitement is building in Douglas County. The Douglas County Boys Basketball program, under the direction of Head Coach Mike Gibbs, is preparing for a two-night tryout event, taking place on November 18th and 19th from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM. This tryout will be the first step in assembling a team capable of taking on the competition and representing the school with pride and determination.

Boys in grades eligible to play who are interested in trying out must complete a few essential steps before stepping onto the court. First and foremost, all players must be signed up and registered through the school. Additionally, each participant is required to have an up-to-date physical to ensure they are ready to safely take on the demands of a rigorous basketball season. This attention to registration and health underscores the program’s commitment to the well-being and preparedness of its players, setting the stage for a season that promises intense training and a dedicated approach to the game.

Coach Gibbs, entering his 1st season as head coach at DC, has a clear vision for the qualities he’s seeking in his players. He emphasizes the importance of “relentless effort” and a “winner mentality,” characteristics he believes are crucial for success both on and off the court. “I’m looking for players who don’t back down, who push themselves and each other to be better every day,” says Gibbs. His approach goes beyond just skill and talent; he is in search of athletes who show up with drive, passion, and an unwavering commitment to personal and team growth.

During the two-night tryouts, players can expect drills and exercises that not only test their physical abilities but also challenge their mental toughness and teamwork skills. The first night will likely focus on fundamental skills, including shooting, dribbling, passing, and defensive techniques, giving coaches a sense of each player’s foundational strengths. The second night will build on this, incorporating situational play and scrimmages to observe how players perform under pressure and work with teammates in game-like conditions.

For many, the tryouts represent more than just a chance to play basketball; they are an opportunity to be part of a team that embodies discipline, camaraderie, and school spirit. The Douglas County Boys Basketball team has built a reputation over the years for its hard-working athletes and competitive edge. This year, Coach Gibbs hopes to continue that legacy, drawing in players who are ready to put in the work and make sacrifices for the success of the team.
Parents and families are encouraged to support their aspiring athletes through the tryout process, ensuring they meet the registration requirements and come prepared both mentally and physically. Athletes should come ready to give their all, showcasing not only their skill but also their determination and resilience — the core values that Coach Gibbs prioritizes.

Ultimately, the two-night tryout is just the beginning of what promises to be an exciting season. For those who make the team, it’s the start of a journey filled with practices, games, and learning experiences. For Coach Gibbs, it’s another year to shape young athletes into capable and confident individuals, both on and off the court.

The Douglas County Boys Basketball program invites all interested and eligible players to participate in this year’s tryouts. With hard work, dedication, and the right mindset, each player has a chance to earn their spot on the team and contribute to a successful season.
