On Tuesday evening, the Douglas County High School (DCHS) Boys Basketball team added a slam dunk of Halloween fun at the school’s annual Trunk or Treat event. The team, known for their skills on the court, showcased their community spirit by joining students, families, and staff to celebrate a festive night filled with costumes, candy, and connection. The event took place in the school parking lot, with decorated car trunks lining the space, each one unique in theme and loaded with treats. By joining in the festivities, the basketball players provided young attendees with a special Halloween experience while reinforcing their commitment to supporting the local community.
The Trunk or Treat event has become a cherished tradition at DCHS, giving local families a safe and fun environment to celebrate Halloween. This year, the basketball team stepped up to make the night even more exciting. Dressed in a variety of costumes, from superheroes to retro basketball stars, the players mingled with kids, distributed candy, and took photos with fans. Each player's participation added to the event's energy and underscored the team’s role as mentors and community leaders.
Head Coach Mike Gibbs was enthusiastic about the team’s involvement. "We’re not just about basketball here at Douglas County," he said. "It’s important for our guys to be role models, to be present in the community, and to show support for these local events. The Trunk or Treat is an opportunity for them to connect with families and younger kids in a positive way. It’s great to see them enjoy themselves while making a difference for others."
In addition to interacting with fans, the team also got creative with trunk themes. Players decorated their trunks to reflect fun, family-friendly themes that matched the Halloween spirit. Each trunk was thoughtfully planned, ensuring that every child who stopped by left with candy and a memorable experience.
Parents and teachers were equally thrilled to see the team involved. Many parents expressed their gratitude for the players’ presence, noting how it added a sense of community to the event. "The kids love seeing the high school athletes out here," said one parent.
The team’s participation in Trunk or Treat reflects the values that Coach Gibbs strives to instill in his players: commitment, community, and leadership. He believes that events like this help his players understand that being a student-athlete involves more than excelling in sports. "Our goal is to develop well-rounded individuals who contribute positively both on and off the court," he said. "When our players engage with the community, it reinforces these values and strengthens the support around our program."
As the night wound down, the smiles and laughter of kids and parents alike filled the parking lot. For many of the young attendees, seeing the players in costume and sharing in the Halloween fun created lasting memories. For the team, it was an evening that highlighted the importance of community involvement and the joy that comes from giving back.
